Heartstopper season 2 ending spoilers (and 6 biggest questions for season 3)

Aug 04, 2023Aug 04, 2023

And just like that, another season of Heartstopper has arrived to leave fans full of feels and, of course, questions. Even if you have already read the books upon which the series is based, there’s no doubt you want to know what will happen after Heartstopper season 2.

In the new season, Charlie and Nick remain blissfully in a relationship, though the pressure of Nick coming out to the world feels much more daunting than he anticipated. Meanwhile, a trip to Paris allows for Nick, Charlie, and their friends to confront some issues they’d been avoiding.

What happens at the end of season 2, and what should fans expect to see happen in season 3? Here’s the ending of Heartstopper season 2 explained, including where Nick and Charlie, Tao and Elle, Tara and Darcy, and Isaac each stand now.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead from Heartstopper season 2!

Although they get really close, Nick and Charlie don’t say “I love you” just yet. In the season finale, after having a difficult, open, and honest conversation, Nick nears saying those three special words, but he’s interrupted by his mom arriving home. On the walk home, Charlie, moved by the conversation and moment, prepares an “I love you” text message to Nick but hesitates sending it.

And that’s the season 2 cliffhanger leading into Heartstopper season 3. We’re left wondering whether Charlie will hit send. Maybe he’ll decide not to send the text message, turn around, and say “I love you” to Nick in person. Either way, it will be another magical and truly heart-stopping moment in Nick and Charlie’s love story.

You might know what to expected from what happens next if you have already read the books, but we’ll have to wait and see what the show has in store for the next chapter Nick and Charlie’s relationship in season 3.

Yes! Elle got into the Lambert School of Art and her art was chosen for an exhibition. All of her friends attend to see her piece “Safe Place” on display at the show. (The piece is a painting of Elle, Charlie, Isaac, and Tao hanging out, which is Elle’s safe place.) During the exhibition, Elle announces that she’s going to Lambert. It’s an unexpected announcement for Elle’s friends to hear (it’s even unexpected for Elle), but they are all excited for her.

Of course, because Elle and Tao are officially a couple, there’s some reservations about Elle moving to a new school. Tao was visibly disappointed about Elle’s decision to attend art school, and he’s felt jealous about her new friends Naomi and Felix. But he pushes all of that aside to be happy for her and wants to keep their relationship going strong no matter what. That’s a lot of growth on Tao’s part! Going into season 3, how will the couple maintain long-distance?

After a rocky road of romance in season 2, Imogen appears to be primed for something much better in season 3. Of course, she starts dating Ben, which isn’t a good idea for anyone. He doesn’t pay attention to her, treats her poorly, and even calls her a b–ch in front of everyone during a group dinner in Paris. Thankfully, the pair break up, and it seems Ben might be leaving for good.

Once Imogen starts hanging out more with Nick and Charlie and their group of friends, she forms a connection with another new addition to the group. Sahar helps plan the prom with the girls and quickly becomes close with the group. While playing with the band during prom, Sahar looks out into the audience to see Imogen looking on fondly. Are they two headed for a romance in season 3?

It takes some time, but Darcy finally opens up to Tara about her emotionally abusive home life. When Tara tells Darcy she loves her, Darcy doesn’t reciprocate, and whenever Tara brings the incident up, Darcy pretends not to remember. Finally, after seemingly ghosting Tara and their friends during prom, Darcy opens up with her girlfriend about what’s going on at home.

Darcy’s unaccepting mother threw her out when she found Darcy trying on her prom suit. She slept in the park and her phone died without access to a charger. Tara sees firsthand that Darcy’s mother isn’t loving when she stops by looking for her. Later, Darcy admits that she didn’t say “I love you” back because she worried Tara only loves the out and confident persona Darcy puts on at school. But Tara loves every part of Darcy, even the part she tries to hide.

While Isaac continues to keep his nose in multiple books throughout season 2, he also receives his own storyline this season revolving around a potential crush. Isaac seems to hit it off with James, a fellow classmate, but when they kiss, Isaac pulls back. He’s confused by his reaction to it. He expected to feel everything his friends feel when they kiss their crushes, but he doesn’t.

During Elle’s art exhibition, Isaac looks at an art piece depicting asexuality and being aromantic, which the artist explains to Isaac when he asks. Suddenly, how he’s been feeling makes sense. He didn’t have the words to explain it to James or his friends. Being Isaac, he turns to a book called Ace, and while he doesn’t come out to his friends yet, he’s reading the book at their personal prom party at Nick’s house. Isaac will surely have a very big and wonderful season 3.

Maybe one of the most unexpected turn of events in season 2, Mr. Ajayi happens to be the one to soften Mr. Farouk’s rough edges. Farouk isn’t one to be messed with, and he’s the stern voice that makes these teens listen. On the Paris trip, Ajayi and Farouk commiserate about corralling these kids and also open up about their personal lives.

Mr. Farouk reveals that he didn’t come out as gay until his late 20s, which left him without the experiences Nick and Charlie are having while sneaking around the hotel. Back in their shared room, it’s implied that Ajayi and Farouk hook up, and Coach Singh later pushes Ajayi to invite Farouk to prom. Farouk shows up at the dance and definitely has a crush on Ajayi.
